Do you know how amazing our livers are? It’s the second largest organ of our body – our skin being the first largest organ. It’s on the right side of the body, just below the rib cage. It’s huge!

And it is the only organ that can regenerate itself – as little as 25% of a liver can regenerate into a whole liver. Amazing. (I had a tonsil grow back after removal when I was a kid, what’s up with that?)

It detoxifys our body, everything we eat, every nutrient and every bit of toxic junk we eat passes through the liver. Then the liver changes it into whatever it changes into and moves it onto where ever it needs to go. I’m sure there is a more scientific way to phrase that – but that’s how I see the liver working. It’s like a big bouncer at the door of the fancy nightclub – directing traffic here and there. And it does it all the time without any admiration and love and notice.

So this bouncer helps digest what we consume, it directs the bad stuff away and it makes proteins and stores glucose (and stores iron too). Proteins that help rebuild and grow and heal. It also makes bile – which is sent to the small intestine and the gall bladder – (the gall bladder stores the bile for times when it’s needed in the small intestine to help with the breakdown of fats.)

So with our SAD (standard american diet) diets, our poor liver is overworked and desperately needs a vacation. If it doesn’t get a vacation soon, it’s going to protest and go on strike. And if it doesn’t go on strike, at the very least it’s not going to doing a very good job. Part of the not doing a good job is what it does with the bile. The liver also uses bile to clean up our blood. Our blood has all kinds of stuff floating around in it most of the time. Undigested food, yeast, parasites (“if you eat meat, you don’t eat alone”), dead red blood cells and such. All this stuff makes the blood thick. That’s why doctors often ask you to “not eat after midnight” before a procedure – they want the blood clean and free of undigested food.

Before I got into raw food, I had a live blood cell analysis done. This is where they stick your finger and put a drop of blood on a glass slide and put it under a microscope which is projected on a monitor (dark-field microscope). At the time, the lady had to jab my finger several times before it would bleed and then the blood was so sticky it barely came out. SO, on the screen, my blood cells were stacked up like checkers. She showed me parasites and undigested food. This was even after fasting since the night before, showing that I was not digesting effectively or efficiently.

She sent me away to spend a week eating lots of salad, drinking lots of water, taking lots of digestive enzymes.

I returned to do the procedure once again. What a difference the week made. She only had to jab me once and the blood flowed freely out. The red blood cells were floating freely around instead of being stacked up. There were no undigested food particles. I don’t recall about the parasites. I had not done a parasite cleanse, so chances were I still had them. The live visual evidence is a powerful tool.

There are many ways to aid and support the body for optimum health. Eating simply, more natural food. Fasting and cleansing when you can. Colonics and enemas when needed. And there is also the coffee enema – one of the cornerstones of the Gerson Institutes Cancer Healing program (coffee helps to open the bile ducts so that the liver may dump its toxins, in case you wondered.) And going the extra mile by supporting our bouncer with a much needed vacation – do a Liver and Gallbladder Cleanse.

She ate meat, drank wine, cooked food and rarely fresh raw fruits and vegies. And when she began fighting her cancer she only used accupuncture, massage and other natural alternative methods – but didn’t change her diet. When the doctor gave her 2 weeks to live, then she asked about the Gerson Institute Therapy. It was too late.

Get some nutrition in you! It’s easy to add a raw green smoothie to your daily diet for a month - see how you feel! It seems to be easier for people to be cut on, to take a pill, to get a shot. I’ve heard that people would change their religion and anything else before they change their diet. Be courageous, get emotional support. Just try.

If you would like to learn more about the facinating Gerson Institute and their program, here are some videos featuring the vibrant Charlotte Gerson, daughter of Dr. Max Gerson. I have put the time length of each of the videos as well as a little description of the content.

“The Gerson Therapy is a safe, natural treatment developed by Dr. Max Gerson in the 1920’s that uses organic foods, juicing, coffee enemas, detoxification and natural supplements to activate the body’s ability to heal itself. Over the past 60 years, thousands of people have used the Gerson Therapy to recover from so-called “incurable” diseases such as cancer, diabetes, heart disease and arthritis.”

This site has some interesting pages and here is a link to a page on the Gerson Protocol that gives an overview of the program.

One cup has 2.2 grams of protein.
10302 IU of vitamin A
80.4 mg of vitamin C
90.5 mg of Calcium
299 mg of Potassium
121 mg Omega 3 fatty acids
90.5 mg Omega 6 fatty acids

There is a lot more, but these are the ones with high numbers that I grabbed from NutritionData.com

I usually consume my kale in green smoothies with papaya and banana. But if you are in the mood for a crunchy tastey snack….

Kale Chips to the rescue!

Remove stems, tear up 1 or 2 bunchs of kale in big pieces. In a big bowl, drizzle some Braggs Amnios, Braggs Apple Cider Vinegar (or fresh lemon juice) on the kale pieces. Add 1 or 2 tablespoons of tahini and a tablespoon or 2 of nutritional yeast.

Massage in well until everything is coated. Spread on dehydrator screens and dry at 115 degrees for an hour. Check them at this time and see if all the pieces are crisp. If not, continue to dry. They dry pretty quick, no need to have the dehydrator running all night on this one!

You can’t ruin this recipe. Adjust the recipe to your taste. Search the internet for “raw kale chips recipe” and you will find lots of variations. Some add garlic, some add blended cashews and more. Check it out.

IMPORTANT NOTE: You are going to wish you bought more kale when you make these. They really do get delicate and crispy and you will be surprised how delicious they are!

I grew up with that name – his name was synonymous with good health. He was a renown body builder, he wrote books, had television shows, he has a star on the walk of fame. Everyone knew of him for his outlandish feats of strength and of course because of his juicing. His website says in big letters: “YOUR HEALTH ACCOUNT IS YOUR WEALTH ACCOUNT!” and “LONG LIVE LIVING LONG!”

Really great and so true! Visit this page on his website to see some of the old television exercise shows “The Jack LaLanne Show” Do a google search for images and see him in his bodybuilding days!

At a young age he was influenced by another vibrant health maverick – Paul Bragg. Raw foodists will enjoy what Jack said during a Katie Couric interview – “If man made it, don’t eat it.” There you go, that’s really as simple as it is!

Thank you Jack for changing the world for the better.

It’s time for the Urban Harvest Fruit Tree Sale! January 15 — held at the University of Houston Robertson Stadium. There are 9 pavillions like the one above right next to the stadium – with every fruit tree imaginable that can grow here on the Gulf Coast. Such a fabulous set up. This is the tropical fruit trees – avocado, bananas, star fruit, dragon fruit. The bananas were sold out in the first 30 minutes.

But we were on the hunt for dragon fruit! I sprouted some seed a couple of weeks ago – fast growers but we didn’t want to wait. Dad has a huge green house and these fellas are going to be so happy! Here he is with a good size American Beauty. Medium to large pink fruit. I also picked up a Purple Haze which has large red fruit.

These were from TreesearchFarms – owner and fruit tree expert Heidi Sheesley. Here she is answering questions for the customers today.

It was very exciting to see so many people loading up their wagons with all variety of fruit trees. If you ever want to plant trees, it should be some sort of food tree that grows well in your area!

We stood in line about 45 minutes to check out. Next year we will grab a wagon like everyone else – I guess you could tell we were first timers. The line snaked around and ended inside the covered area of the stadium. They take cash, check and credit card. Everyone… ever single person was happy and smiling! Fruit trees make you happy! Plant one today.

Found the Holy Grail in raw food. The 80/10/10 low fat raw vegan information from Dr. Doug Graham.

Every page I read I wanted to bookmark. Its informative and backed with tons of research. It’s all about the natural way we are meant to nourish our bodies… and you can find it all at your grocery produce department. You don’t have to order exotic supplements and powders and other fancy raw crap that is being peddled online — know I know why that peddled crap and the way it was marketed always bothered me. It’s because it’s just not natural. It’s not needed. (And OMG someone is actually selling “raw water” now).

When I read that the medical industry has published studies that say diabetics need to eat fruit and stay off the fat – it blew my mind. There are doctors out there telling people to not eat fruit because of the sugar content! When you eat fruit, the body sucks up that awesome juicy nutrition and uses the glucose for energy and the insulin receptors do their job and attach to the sugar and use it and move it out of the system. BUT when you have fat in your system taking forever to digest and get out of the system, the poor little receptors can’t do their job because the fat is blocking them. They are like little fat bouncers standing out front of a tough biker bar shaking their head no. So the sugar floats around wondering what to do. If diabetics stayed off fat, they could get off their meds.

The unusual title of the book refers to getting 80% of calories from carbs (fruit) 10% of our calories from protein (greens) and 10% of our calorie from fat (nuts, avo, seed). See NutritionData.com and NutriDiary.com to check the nutrients from your food. For example here is the nutrient data from my usual green papaya smoothie:

Papaya Green Smoothie
200 grams papaya (a good full cup cubed)
100 grams banana (one medium about 7″ long)
100 grams romaine (5 or 6 leaves)

I think this is the way our bodies were biologically designed to eat. Perhaps it’s not for everyone – but if you are a raw foodist that is having difficulty sticking to raw because of cooked food cravings – try low fat raw vegan, read the book. You will see that just eating more fruit obliterates the cooked food craving. And if you are eating 811 and still craving – you aren’t eating enough fruit, get those calories in! When you’re used to always trying to eat low cal, 2000 plus calories a day is hard to wrap your head around.

With all the calories you need to increase your activity – but the cool thing is…you are so full of energy that you just get up and move! You’re body wants to move. And have a total blast when you are consuming so much fruit, people are going to notice. When they see that and say the typical “where do you get your protein?” You can be straight and say “from fruits and vegetables.” Or you can have fun with them and say “How much protein do we need?” They never know. Never once has someone who has asked me that ever has an answer. There is 4 grams of protein in that green smoothie – and that’s just one meal or a snack. Well, the issue of protein is one for another post another time.

If you compare to the first post of my Burger Museum you’ll see the cheese now looks a little darker – otherwise, pretty much the same. I dusted this jar for the photo – the grime you see is on the inside. The burger fell about the jar when I took it down from its “show place” (okay, it’s on top of the frige) so I opened it to reposition it and took a whiff to see if it had any odor. It had a slight odd chemical scent.

I got the idea of making my own Burger Museum from watching Morgan Spurlocks movie “Super Size Me.” A thought provoking and a bit scary movie. Watch it and don’t miss the bonus material. Start you’re own burger museum. Check out others by searching on Google for “burger museum” and join the club!

I suggest wearing a disguise to go to your local fast food joint (you know, so your raw food friends won’t see you and point and call the raw food police).

The whole point is to illustrate that this IS NOT FOOD!

Please remember this the next time you’re having some fast food cravings. Drink some water, eat lots of fruit and run, RUN, RUN AWAY – it’s only the drug of junk food wanting it’s fix – don’t feed that fix.

Live raw, live well, eat fresh fruit and dance full of vibrant health.

love,

Julie
